Richard Nixon: Quacks, Cures & Controversy

Propaganda Of The Victors? nixon-healing-richard-nixon.JPG

Who was Richard Nixon’s doctor?

Controversy has flared in Whittier California, where Nixon’s Alma Mater hopes to destroy a local home despite it’s newly asserted historic significance.

A grandson of the owner has surfaced, claiming his grandfather was Nixon’s personal physician, and that this somehow demands saving the house.

His story contradicts the glorious legend of Dr. John Lungren, father of US Representative Dan Lungren and usually described as filling the role with Nixon.

Mr. Reagan, Give Them Back Their Wall!

Communism Point & Click berlin-digital-wall.jpg

So little is left of the Berlin Wall that Reuters reports authorities have resorted to handing tourists a GPS powered device if they want to recreate that closed in feeling.

We know where the Wall went: vast chunks carried off to America for victory displays. Prime offenders are Presidential Libraries, which are cluttered with the stuff.

Let’s review:

George H.W. Bush has a cheesy salute to Berlin bush-berlin-wall-horses.jpg and all things Texan outside his museum, and indoors bush-sr-berlin-wall-indoors.JPG Wall as well. And Bush Secretary of State James Baker got a berlin-wall-rice-university.jpg chunk for his Rice University Institute.

Ford has a piece, ford-berlin-wall-piece.JPG although the Wall rested undisturbed throughout his presidency.

nixon-berlin-wall-2.jpg Nixon too.

Kennedy saw it built on his watch. kennedy-berlin-wall.jpg

The Hoover Library has a Wall piece, hoover-library-berlin-wall.jpgalthough he barely lived long enough to see it built, three decades after his presidency.

Truman hosted Churchill’s Iron Curtain speech at Westminister College in Fulton Missouri, and the campus now hosts both a plain chunk berlin-wall-westminister-colleg-fulton.jpg and a Wall “sculpture” – a piece with holes punched in it by Churchill’s granddaughter. berlin-sculpturebreakthrough.jpg She also sold one of these horrors to the Roosevelt library.

The greater glory of Ronald Reagan requires the most concrete, with Wall samples at his Dixon Illinois reagan-berlin-wall-dixon.jpg birthplace, alma mater reagan-eureka-berlin-wall-at-the-reagan-center.jpg Eureka College, at the federal Reagan reagan-berlin-wall-reagan-building.jpg office building in Washington, aboard reagan-berlin-wall-uss-reagan-bronze-on-berlin-wall.JPG the USS Ronald Reagan, reagan-berlin-wall-reagan-ranch-office.jpg at the Reagan Ranch Center, and at the Reagan Library indoors reagan-berlin-wall-indoors.jpg & out. reagan-berlin-wall-outdoors.jpg

And they used to sell bags of chips.

Let Him Come To Berlin

kennedy-brandenberg-gate.jpg Dreams From My Fathers reagan-wall-speech.jpg

Barack Obama continues his stroll with greatness, now planning to hype the Reagan and JFK comparisons to dizzy new heights by taking his act to Berlin.

Other pols have gotten some of that Platz Pizazz too. nixon-berlin-wall.jpg

berlin-executive-size-berlin-wall.JPG The Wall may be gone, but lives in voters of a certain age’s mental film archives. Combined with the incessant cable news dribble and drone about “iconic imagery,” he should have a good day.

And the expected Obama lovefest from Germany’s most left-wing city may resonate with those Americans who cringe at the image George W. Bush has projected abroad recently.

There’s a lot to overcome, even on the ground in Berlin. berlin-us-embassey.jpg The justly hated new American embassy is convenient to the Brandenburg Gate, so over time all the world can come to appreciate this really nice college dorm building.

Nixon Now!

Bring Us Together nixon-pretty-girls-for-nixon.png

Hearts aflutter at the Nixon papers in the US Archives Maryland facility – yes, they are still hanging on there until the Yorba Lindists build enough space in their “library” to hold actual documents.

Apparent National Archives intern Eneuman blogs about College Park creeps… until she meets a boy.

“I did meet a cute guy on the bus. Unfortunately he’s going back to wherever he came from-either Santa Barbara Cali or somewhere in Ohio. He was a researcher at the Nixon library and I met him on the bus. Had a discussion about the research, etc. He was soo my type (burly hiker hippie dude..kind of?)”

Nico Never Wavers

Scalia Speaks scalia.JPG

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia claims to be an “Originalist” in court decisions, but he likes his history predictable, if wrong.

Defending his 2000 Florida recount cutoff, Scalia goes with a classic, offering the legend of a noble Richard Nixon putting country above self, declining to challenge the disputed 1960 election.

“Richard Nixon, when he lost to [John F.] Kennedy thought that the election had been stolen in Chicago, which was very likely true with the system at the time,…But he did not even think about bringing a court challenge. That was his prerogative. So you know if you don’t like it, don’t blame it on me…I didn’t bring it into the courts. Mr Gore brought it into the courts.”

Others aren’t so sure about silent, selfless, sixties Nixon.

“Three days after the election, party Chairman Sen. Thruston Morton launched bids for recounts and investigations in 11 states—an action that Democratic Sen. Henry Jackson attacked as a “fishing expedition.” Eight days later, close Nixon aides, including Bob Finch and Len Hall, sent agents to conduct “field checks” in eight of those states. Peter Flanigan, another aide, encouraged the creation of a Nixon Recount Committee in Chicago. All the while, everyone claimed that Nixon knew nothing of these efforts—an implausible assertion that could only have been designed to help Nixon dodge the dreaded “sore loser” label.”
