Richard Nixon As You’ve Never Seen Him

Role Model nixon-grave-stone.jpg

Richard Nixon continues to inspire, even from beyond.

Gay American Jim McGreevey’s resignation as New Jersey’s Governor prompted speculation he’d rise Nixon-like from the political grave, or not.

Now former New Jersey resident Nixon has returned to McGreevey’s life, but not in the good way. McGreevey’s embroiled in divorce proceedings with his wife, and claims his circumstances render him practically unemployable.

The wife’s lawyer John Post says McGreevey needs to buckle down and do a Nixon.

“Post dismissed the argument that McGreevey is unable to find work, saying even Richard Nixon wrote books and made money on the lecture circuit after resigning the presidency under the glare of impeachment.

“The notion that there is some notoriety or disgrace that can’t be overcome if the person wants to do it is another flaw in [McGreevey’s] analysis,” Post said.”

Heston Laid Down The Law

Steve Clemons provides a Richard Nixon footnote to the nation’s tearful remembrance of the gun-bearer’s Moses, Charlton Heston.

Clemons was handling some of the Nixon funeral logistics, and called Heston to inquire if the great man would visit the sacred ground in Yorba Linda.

“When I asked Mr. Heston if he would like to attend President Nixon’s funeral, his response was: “In what capacity?”

I wasn’t sure what he meant, so I repeated the question of whether he’d like to attend and whether he would need a limo/town car pass — and told him that I’d make arrangements for him in the family section.

He said, “I thank you for all that — but will I have a role?”

I said I couldn’t really arrange that. After all, we already had a program that featured Billy Graham, Bill Clinton, Bob Dole, Henry Kissinger, California Governor Pete Wilson, and others*.

And then he said, “No, I can’t attend. Thank you for the offer.”

And Their Children After Them

Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter Here truman-flame.jpg

A new report on burial plans for Harry Truman daughter Margaret Truman Daniel raises a sub question to a larger question: if Presidents insist on pharaohic entombment in their Presidential Libraries, do we have to put up with their relatives as well? Margaret’s ashes are to be buried at the Truman Library along with her late husband’s.

Space is already set aside for Betty Ford ford-grave-bush-visit.jpg and the Bush’s plans appear well advanced. bush-grave-marker.jpg

Never Forget, Never Forgive

Rehab efforts continue at the Nixon Library.

Hundreds gathered to mark Nixon’s 95th birthday, the Navy sent a wreath, and Admiral Raymond Berube identified the Disgracedformerpresidenttrademark2.gif as that fail-safe superlative, a difference maker. difference-maker.jpg

“He inherited a country weighed down with war and political instability,” the Orange County Register quotes Berube, implying Nixon in some way moderated these phenomena.

One Register reader ain’t buying it:

“He woul dhave been 95 and if there was justice in this country he would just now be eligible for parole.”

Reaching Today’s Youth

From the Journal of vikisu202:

“the last few days have been essentially uneventful

monday: I went to the Richard Nixon Library with Neel, oliver, and michael. Michael was making completely inappropriate sexual jokes as usual. We only went for the extra credit for gov. Ironically, the only exhibit we wanted to see was watergate and it was “under construction”. It was one of the most boring museums ive ever been to. There were a billion random christmas trees everwhere though. At night, we went to austins house and ate a lot of food. We watched some tennis and hannah montana. then onto 2008!”
