Nixonland: World of Wonder

Looking For A Few Good Men

nixon-campaigns-1968.gif

Every day is Christmas as Rick Perlstein travels our great nation flogging Nixonland. His new tellings of old anecdotes unfold amidst his amazement at people’s lack of knowledge about Richard Nixon’s sordid roots.

Newest example: Perlstein being asked again and again about king of all media and 1968 Nixon advisor Roger Ailes.

ailes-roger-you-are-the-message.jpg The rotund operative on what he looked for when stacking a Nixon “town meeting”:

“A good, mean, Wallaceite cab-driver. Wouldn’t that be great? Some guy to sit there and say, ‘Awright, Mac, what about these niggers?… Ailes walked up and down a nearby taxi stand until he found a cabbie who fit the bill.

That’s the creep who runs America’s vaunted “fair and balanced” network.”

How to keep up with the Nixonland juggernaut? Perlstein is harnessing the power of social networking! He’s reaching out to all of the saggy demographic who’ve swamped Facebook, who may now enjoy Nixon news accompanied by American Apparel ads! [registration required] nixonland-facebook.JPG

Fox & Friends, And Friends

douglas-frederick.jpg The Other douglas-stephen.jpg

The militant halfwits of Fox & Friends are storied in legend and song for promoting crackpot stories of madrassa raised Barack Obama and other smears.

But what if all they are is dim?

Evidence for the affirmative: Fox & Friends confusing abolitionist Frederick Douglas with Abraham Lincoln sparing partner Stephen Douglas. lincoln-fox-frederick-douglas.JPG You can see an MSNBC clip of the buffoonery here.

Hillary Clinton’s latest hat trick of calling for “Lincoln-Douglas” style debates appears to be going nowhere, but not before snagging Fox along with the Tiffany Network, which reported:

“She said she would like to see an Abraham Lincoln-Frederick Douglas style debate, where the two traveled around Illinois debating one-on-one.”

Don’t Tell Papa

Family Ties nixon-davis.jpg

The Nixon family has long enjoyed a special relationship with African Americans.

And now a Nixon daughter endorses Obama!

Wright Wing Wonder

Fair, Balanced, And Without Clue fox-news-special-presentation.JPG

Fox News has rushed to embrace all things Founding Father-ish, proudly affirming it’s own targeting alongside the great dead whites by beloved Chicago minister Jeremiah Wright.

The Chicago Sun-Times reported Wright’s speech at a weekend funeral, and it was noteworthy for stating the smokin’ hot non-controversial obvious.

“… while Wright made no mention of terrorism, he did revisit the topic of America’s mistreatment of blacks, saying America’s founding fathers “planted slavery and white supremacy in the DNA of this republic,” and adding that Thomas Jefferson wrote, “ ‘God would punish America for the sin of slavery.’ I guess that makes Thomas Jefferson unpatriotic,” he said to the cheers of the congregation.”

fox-and-friends-graphic.png Fox rushed to proudly associate itself with the First Slavers.

“Rev. Jeremiah Wright told a congregation in Norfolk, Va., on Sunday that reporters sneaked into a private funeral service a day before, in which he blasted America’s founding fathers for slavery and white supremacy and received standing ovations for attacking FOX News for covering his anti-American sermons.”

This is a very old discussion.

“For revolting barbarity and shameless hypocrisy, America reigns without a rival.” douglas-frederick.jpg

Shelf Life

Bookish jefferson-books.jpg

Thomas Jefferson continues to get bad press over slavery and his domestic entanglements, but everybody loves a reader!

The Washington Post reports on efforts by the Library of Congress to recreate Jefferson’s library, purchased in the rebuilding of the institution after the British burned much of Washington DC. Much of Jefferson’s library itself burned in a later fire.

The L of C has managed to replicate most of the tomes, and is opening an exhibit to show them off.

Literary Round-Up jefferson-books-shelved.jpg

The Library continues to operate the “Thomas” legislative facts and stats site, a tragic leftover from the AskJeevesish jeeves.jpg anthropomorphic era of cute web names.
